Interview with DAGGERPLAY

We proudly present you a short interview and band presentation:

RMN: Where are you from and what’s the origin of your band name?

DAGGERPLAY: Cheers! We´re from Helsinki, Finland. I´ve always admired the great late Finnish writer / poet Arto Melleri. He wrote a book called Puukkobulevardi (Knife boulevard in English). Puukkobulevardi is the nickname of the street, Vaasankatu, in Kallio, Helsinki. I´ve been living in Kallio for more than ten years and it is quite influential location in many ways.  Yet, when was thinking about the name Knife Boulevard it just didn´t sound very good.  Somehow the name Daggerplay just appeared after thinking.

RMN: Introduce shortly your band members and history

DAGGERPLAY: Tommi Luostarinen is the youngest member of Daggerplay. A great guitarist with a true punk rock´n´roll touch. Brilliant arranger, too. Ville Ahonen is rocker with loads of tattoos playing that bass with heart and soul. Sirpa Immonen is my wife and a brilliant drummer who can play 40 Ramones songs on stage and not slowing down a bit. I am Pekko Mantzin, a lead singer, guitarist and a song writer of Daggerplay. A bluespunkcountryrockn´n´roller.  That´s a way of life for me.

RMN: What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?

DAGGERPLAY: Punk rock, 50´s & 60´s rockn´roll, country, rockabilly and hard rock and 50´s and 60´s pop music. When it comes to major influences I´d have to say the list would be too long.. But let´s put in this way that all of us like Rancid. So from Hank Williams to Rancid via Elvis, Johnny Cash,  Beatles, Beach Boys, Ramones, Clash, Guns and Roses to Rancid and Green Day would give some kinda idea.. Probably.

RMN: What are the main themes or topics for your songs?

DAGGERPLAY: Living low, mental problems, boredom, drink, more problems, drugs, and more problems.

RMN: Where have you already performed and  do you have any upcoming shows?

DAGGERPLAY: During these three years plus we have played more than fifty gigs in Finland which is a pretty good from a band who hasn´t got a booking agency. Especially in a small country like Finland is. Just last night we played here in Helsinki with three other bands in a club called Lepakkomies. Great night indeed. In the end of this month we´ll be playing again here in Helsinki.

RMN: Any last words?
